Setup is the first step.

Beginners frequently make the mistake of selecting the incorrect website platform. Fortunately, you’re here, so you won’t make that mistake.

A self-hosted WordPress.org site is ideal for the majority of users. Please see our guide on why you should use WordPress for more information on this subject. It includes thousands of designs and addons that enable you to create any type of website you can imagine.

Anyone can download WordPress for free and use it to create any type of website they want.

Where does the cost come from if WordPress is free?

Because you’ll have to arrange your own domain name and web hosting service, which both cost money, WordPress is free. See our article Why is WordPress Free? for more information on this topic.

A domain name is the internet address for your website. Your users will type this into their browsers to get to your site (for example, wpbeginner.com or google.com).

After that, you’ll require website hosting. This is where your website will reside on the internet. A web host is required for all websites on the internet to store their files.

A domain name costs $14.99 per year, and hosting starts at $7.99 per month.

For most people who are just getting started, this is a lot.

Fortunately, Bluehost has agreed to provide our users with a free domain name as well as a 60% discount on web hosting.

â’ Claim this Exclusive Bluehost Offer by clicking here.

They’re also a WordPress.org-approved hosting provider. Bluehost is one of the world’s largest hosting companies.

That is why they have promised us that if you are unable to set up your website using this tutorial, our expert team will complete the process for you at no charge. They’ve been using WordPress since 2005 and are dedicated to contributing to the community. They will cover our costs, so you won’t have to. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require free website setup assistance.

We will receive a small commission if you purchase hosting through our referral link at no additional cost to you. In fact, you will receive a discount on hosting as well as a free SSL certificate and a domain name. This commission would be earned if we recommended any WordPress hosting company, but we only recommend products that we use ourselves and believe will benefit our readers. Note: We at WPBeginner believe in openness.

Let’s get started with the domain name and hosting.

To begin, open a new browser window and go to the Bluehost website, then click the green ‘Get Started Now’ button.

The most popular plans among our users are the basic and plus plans. This will take you to a pricing page where you can select your website’s hosting plan.

Select the plan you want and move on to the next step by clicking select.

You’ll be asked to choose a new domain name on the next screen.

You should ideally use a.com domain name. Make sure it’s relevant to your industry, simple to say and spell, and easy to remember.

Check out these tools and tips for picking the best domain name. Do you need assistance selecting a domain name for your website?

To proceed, click the next button after you’ve chosen your domain name.

You will now be asked to provide account information such as your name, address, and email address.

If you decide you need them later, you can always add them. Optional extras are also available for purchase on this screen. We don’t recommend buying these add-ons in general.

To complete the purchase, you must then enter your payment information.

You will receive an email with instructions on how to access your web hosting control panel (cPanel) after completing your purchase.

This is where you manage your hosting account, including getting support, setting up emails, and so on. Most importantly, this is where WordPress will be installed.

Step 2: Download and install WordPress

They created this one-click WordPress installer to make it easier for non-technical users to build websites. When you sign up for Bluehost through our link, they will install WordPress for you automatically.

To get started, simply log into your Bluehost account and click the Login to WordPress button.

You can also access the WordPress dashboard directly from your browser by going to yoursite.com/wp-admin/.

To create additional websites, simply go to the My Sites section and use their one-click WordPress installer. You can create multiple websites with your Bluehost account.

If you’re using a different WordPress website hosting service, such as SiteGround, HostGator, or WP Engine, you can find step-by-step instructions for those providers in our comprehensive guide on how to install WordPress.

Once WordPress is installed, you can start customizing your website by choosing a new template and adding new pages.

Wasn’t that a breeze?

Let’s move on to the next step, which is picking a design for your website.

Step 3: Choose a Theme

A WordPress theme is in charge of the visual appearance of your WordPress site.

WordPress themes are professionally designed templates that you can use to change the look of your website.

When you go to your website, you’ll see something like this: Every WordPress site comes with a basic theme by default.

Most users will find this unappealing.

But don’t worry; there are thousands of free and paid WordPress themes available for you to choose from.

The WordPress admin dashboard is where you can change your theme. Click on the ‘Add New’ button on the Appearance» Themes page.

On the next screen, you’ll be able to browse through the 8.474 free WordPress themes in the official WordPress.org theme directory. You can sort them by popular, latest, featured, and other filters (such as industry, layout, and so on).

Do you require assistance in selecting a theme? Check out our collection of free WordPress business themes, as well as our pick of the best premium WordPress themes.

You might also be interested in our guide to choosing the best WordPress theme for your website.

It’s a popular multi-purpose free WordPress theme with a variety of design options suitable for a wide range of websites. We’ll be using Bento for the purposes of this guide.

If you know the name of the free theme you want to install, you can search for it by typing it into the search box.

To install the theme, move your mouse over it and click the Install button. In the search results, WordPress will show you the theme.

After you’ve installed your theme, go to the Appearance menu and select Customize from the drop-down menu.

This will open the theme customizer, where you can modify your theme settings while viewing a live preview of your website.

You don’t have to finish all of the theme settings right away. Once you have some content on your website, you will be able to customize it much more.

Let’s take a look at how you can add content to your WordPress site.

Step 4: Fill Your Site With Content

Posts are part of the blogging functionality and are displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent items appear first). Posts and pages are the two default content types in WordPress.

Pages, on the other hand, are meant to be static “one-off” content like your about page, contact page, privacy policy, custom landing page, and so on.

WordPress displays your blog posts on the front page of your website by default. You can change this and have WordPress display any static page as your website’s homepage (we’ll show you how later in this guide).

To display your most recent posts, you can create a separate page for your blog or news section. You can also create a website without including a blog section.

After that, let’s start adding some content to your website.

Don’t be concerned if you don’t have enough content for these pages right now. You’ll begin by adding a couple of pages to your WordPress site. You can always make changes and updates to them.

In the WordPress admin area, create a new page. Go to Pages» for more information. Depending on your theme, this will take you to the page editor screen, which will look something like this:

To begin, give your page a title; for example, call it ‘Home’.

After that, use the text editor below to add content. You can include text, links, images, videos, audio, and more.

After you’ve finished adding content to your page, click the publish button to have it appear on your website.

An about page, a contact page, and a blog page to display blog posts, for example. You can repeat the process by adding more pages to your website’s various sections.

Let’s now add a few blog posts to the mix.

In your WordPress admin area, go to Posts» Add New, where you’ll see a screen similar to the one you saw when adding pages.

In the sidebar, you’ll also notice some additional options such as post formats, categories, and tags. In the visual post editor, you can add a title and then content.

You can save your post as a draft or publish it to make it visible on your site by clicking the save button.

Please see our guide on how to add a new post in WordPress for more information on how to use all of these options on the post and page edit screens.

Step 5: Tailoring and Fine-Tuning Your Website

You’ll be able to customize and present your content in a nice presentable shape for your users now that you’ve created some content for your own website.

Let’s begin by creating a static front page (also referred to as a homepage).

Constructing a Static Front Page

Click on the static front page under the ‘Front page displays’ option, then select the ‘Pages’ you created earlier for your home and blog pages. In your WordPress admin dashboard, go to the Settings » Reading page.

Don’t forget to save your changes by clicking the ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom of the page.

WordPress will now use the ‘Home’ page as the front page of your site and the ‘Blog’ page to display your blog posts.

Change the title and tagline of your website.

You get to choose the title of your site during the installation process. The tag line ‘Just another WordPress site’ is automatically added to your site title by WordPress.

You can change the title and tagline of your site at any time by going to the Settings» General page.

The name of your website, such as WPBeginner, will be your site title. In most cases, the tag line is a single line that describes your website.

If you want, you can leave the tag line field blank because WordPress SEO plugins such as AIOSEO, Yoast SEO, and others will override it for better search engine optimization (more on this later).

Don’t forget to save your changes by clicking the save changes button.

Configure the Comment Settings

This is beneficial to WordPress user engagement, but it is also a target for spammers. WordPress has a built-in comment system that allows your visitors to leave feedback on your posts.

You’ll need to enable comment moderation on your website to deal with this.

Select ‘Comment must be manually approved’ from the drop-down menu. Scroll down to the ‘Before a comment appears’ section on the Settings» Discussions page.

Don’t forget to save your changes by clicking the save changes button.

Make a navigation menu

Users can navigate to different pages or sections of your website using navigation menus. WordPress includes a robust navigation menu system, which your WordPress theme makes use of to display menus.

Let’s start by adding a navigation menu to your site.

Click the create menu button after giving your navigation menu a name. To begin, go to the Appearance» Menus page.

Your navigation menu will now be created by WordPress. However, it will be empty for the time being.

After that, select the pages you want to include in your menu and click the add to menu button.

You can reposition these menu items in the menu by moving them up and down. You’ll notice that the empty space in your navigation menu has been filled with the pages you’ve chosen.

Your WordPress theme determines where these locations are. You must now choose a display location. Most WordPress themes have a primary menu that appears in the top header of your website.

Finally, save your navigation menu by clicking the save menu button.

You can now see the menu in action on your website.

See our beginner’s guide on how to add a navigation menu in WordPress for more information.

Installing Plugins (Step 6)

Consider contact forms, photo galleries, and other similar features. WordPress Plugins are similar to apps for your website. They allow you to customize and add features to your WordPress site.

By going to the Plugins page in your WordPress dashboard, you can install plugins.

Paid plugins are also available from third-party websites and developers. There are currently over 58,000 free WordPress plugins available.

This article does a fantastic job of explaining the steps. Thank you so much for doing this!

I’ve decided on a theme and know how to add new pages. Is it possible to select a new theme and rebuild each page from scratch? Last year, I created my first and only WordPress website, which I now want to update with new content. When I install and activate a theme, however, it immediately replaces the content/information of my “old website”.

Is there any helpful advice, or is there a guide or video that explains this?

That’s how themes work; they don’t alter your content in any way. If you want to completely reset your site and delete all of the content, follow the steps below:

Will only those with a username and password be able to see it? How will this website be accessible to others?

If someone came to your domain, they’d see the site but not be able to edit it because they didn’t have access to the editing tools. It is only by logging into the site that you are able to make changes.

Could you suggest the best plugin(s) or method(s) for having guest writers contribute to your blog?

Thank you!!

Can I use the WordPress Site Builder on BlueHost with WordPress.org?

Yes, a WordPress.org site built on a host such as BlueHost is a WordPress.org site.

I have my own domain name and hosting facility. How do I get rid of Bluehost and start building my website?

To install WordPress, you’d use your hosting provider’s tools, and the rest of the steps would be the same.

I’ve got a logo and a new domain name, and I’d like to build a simple website. In addition, I would like to create other professional websites. Is WordPress the best option here?

WordPress is something we would recommend.

Instructions can be found in your site administrator’s email inbox. On your website, there was a critical error. I’m not sure where I should go to check my email inbox. There is a fatal error on my website.

Take a look at our article below to learn how to fix that error: https://kiuz.it/beginners-guide/beginners-guide-to-troubleshooting-wordpress-errors-step-by-step/

That doesn’t work, so I’ve paid money and am now winging it without a clear and simple way to download WordPress. See the section above about going to cPanel and downloading WordPress.

Take a look at the following guide for more information on the new installation method: Start a WordPress blog at https://kiuz.it/start-a-wordpress-blog/

Thank you very much! Thank you so much for your assistance! I’d like to modernize the website on my own now, changing the theme and some designs without jeopardizing the SEO ranking. I’m not sure how I’m going to do it. David is a man of many talents. I had a question: I have a WordPress website that was built for me 5 years ago and has a fantastic SEO ranking. Hello, thank you for the useful information!

WordPress SEO can be found at https://kiuz.it/wordpress-seo/. In general, changing the design of your site should not affect your SEO ranking, but if you want to improve your site’s SEO, check out our guide below:

You give directions for things that aren’t useful. What about people who already have a website that they want to convert to WordPress? The internet is full of the same nonsense: buy hosting from Bluehost.

If you still need hosting, you can use one of our guides to install WordPress on a new host: https://kiuz.it/wp-tutorials/how-to-move-wordpress-to-a-new-host-or-server-with-no-downtime/.

Another option is to replace your active site with a staging environment: https://kiuz.it/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-staging-environment-for-a-wordpress-site/

It was extremely beneficial. Because newbies launch a live site right away, the dev site will show up in search results. Could you also explain how to set up a development site and then migrate it to a live site?

If you’re referring to a staging site, we have a guide on how to set one up below: https://kiuz.it/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-a-wordpress-staging-environment/

It is a very useful guide. For new learners, it’s simple to understand and revise!

We’re glad you found our information useful.

Hello there, When I tried to login as admin, however, I received the following error message. Cpanel was used to install WordPress.

On this server, the requested URL /404.html could not be found. This page was not found.

Additionally, when using an ErrorDocument to handle the request, a 404 Not Found error was encountered.

Please accept my sincere gratitude.

Check with your hosting provider or edit your.htaccess file using the method described in our guide: https://kiuz.it/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-wordpress-posts-returning-404-error/.

Thank you for being so informative and helpful. You guys are the best.

You’re welcome; we’re glad we could be of assistance.

It is far more obvious than in textbooks.

We’re glad you found our information useful.

Exceptionally clear and extremely useful.

We’re glad our guide was useful.

This is a fantastic article. I should add that it’s top-notch.

Thank you for your kind words; we’re glad you enjoyed our article.

Always on point when it comes to WordPress design and development. I literally started by following WPBeginner’s advice, and they’ve done it again.

Thank you; we’re glad you found our information useful.

It’s fantastic information. However, I have some WordPress-related questions; how can I get assistance?

It would depend on the type of assistance you require; for more information, see https://kiuz.it/beginners-guide/how-to-properly-ask-for-wordpress-support-and-get-it/.

However, I couldn’t help but notice that “help you set up your website for free” should be “help you set up your website for free”. Nice job on the article! A setup is a thing, but you’re the one who sets it up.

Thank you for letting us know about our grammatical error.

Can I transfer the domain name if my organization has already purchased a domain name for the website but it is up to me to purchase a hosting site? What’s the deal with Bluehost?

If you buy a domain somewhere other than your hosting provider, you can either transfer the domain to your new host or, if you contact your host, they may be able to point domain names to their hosting without requiring you to change hosts.

I’m having a lot of trouble getting it to work. I’m looking for assistance in creating a privacy policy for my website.

If you’re just getting started, you should be able to use WordPress’ privacy policy generator, which can be found under Settings>Privacy.

I’m wondering if I can save the website I built with WordPress. This is fantastic. It was extremely beneficial.

You can save the site and, if desired, create a backup of it using one of the tools described in our article here: https://kiuz.it/plugins/7-best-wordpress-backup-plugins-comparison-of-benefits-and-drawbacks/

So far, the tutorial has been excellent; however, I am stuck at the point where I have paid for the service. What am I doing incorrectly? When I go to the Bluehost cpanel, I don’t see the icon for installing WordPress that this tutorial mentions.

You might be seeing their newer interface, but there should be a My Sites section when you log in that allows you to create your own site.

Please accept my apologies for my ignorance. Is that the name of my website if I buy the domain name? If I can’t find it, how can I tell others what it is? Hello, this was an excellent guide, and I was able to complete the website; however, I cannot find it on Google, and neither can my husband, despite the fact that I went to Bluehost and published it. Is it possible that I’m just being naive?

If you purchased your domain, that is where people will find your site, and most websites use a title that is similar to their URL. There are a few factors to consider when it comes to finding your site on Google, and you should read our guide here: https://kiuz.it/beginners-guide/beginners-guide-to-getting-my-wordpress-site-listed-on-google/

You are, without a doubt, a bright individual. Thank you.

You are most welcome.

Please accept my sincere gratitude. I was looking for this post, and if someone wants to start multiple websites, they can use the same email platform account for all of them, or they can use a different email platform for each one. Sir, your explanation is excellent, but you haven’t mentioned when the e-mail subscription button should be added to WordPress.

If you’re looking for a subscription, check out this article:

When it comes to websites, you can usually use the same email and login information to log into multiple sites if that’s what you want to do.

Hello there,

I understand how to install WordPress after signing up for a hosting account, but I’m still unsure about wordpress.org. Is the wordpress.org version only used if you have your own webserver, or is it also used if you want to customize it yourself? On the one hand, I see that you can simply sign up with a hosting company, install WordPress, and you’re good to go, but on the other hand, I see that you’ll need a web server to self-host wordpress.org.

It’s a WordPress.org site if you install WordPress on your own server or through a hosting provider. WordPress.com sites are websites created using the WordPress.com platform, which should clear things up for you.

What went wrong, exactly? I followed the instructions, but the screen that appeared when I clicked on “Pages>>Add New” looked nothing like the one in the Guide. A full-screen canvas with the cursor flashing in the middle of a Box that says “Add Title” and “start typing or type / to choose a Block” is displayed. I then fell at the first hurdle when I got to “Add content to your site”! I spent an entire day reading the extremely helpful Guide “How to Make a Website”, working my way through Setup, Install WordPress, and Select Your Theme, diverting using links as I went to ensure that I understood everything. This isn’t the same as a Page Editor window.

That would be the Gutenberg/block editor; for a better understanding of how to use it, see our guide here: Gutenberg/block editor. https://kiuz.it/beginners-guide/how-to-create-a-new-post-in-wordpress-and-take-advantage-of-all-of-the-features/
